Smoked black tea in Tieris

January 24, 2014

This is a tea room called Tieris(티에리스 in Korean). I went there last Friday night after work to round off a long week.

It is hidden in a residential area in Bangbae-dong, the southern part of Seoul, but quite popular among black tea lovers. The place is small with less than 10 tables.

This tea room has a selection of black tea from tea farms all around the world. I had a hot pot of Lapsang souchong black tea for the day. The tea, originating from China and widely known as the world's first black tea, has a unique smoky flavor. Its leaves are smoke-dried on fires, which gives it another name the smoked tea.

The taste was quite different from other black teas I used to have, but not in a bad way.
I would like to try it again some other time.

I had the tea with home-made scones served with jam and clotted cream. I heard their pound cake is also tasty. Next time I will try an afternoon tea set.

Chrysanthemum Tea in Insa-dong

January 21, 2014

It was cold today after heavy snow yesterday in Seoul. The snow had turned to grey slush, so it was not that pleasant to walk around the city.

Anyway, I went for a short walk to a district of Insa-dong(인사동 in Korean) to get some fresh air after lunch. It is 15 to 20 minutes walk from my workplace. As a matter of fact, I just got to the edge of the district because of the limited time.

Insa-dong is known as a center of Korean art with many galleries and antique shops. It is a hot spot for foreign tourists for its historic features and traditional Korean foods.

There are also many tea houses where one can taste Korean-style tea and desserts. I had a cup of chrysanthemum tea in one of those tea houses. My colleague ordered jujube tea with pine nuts in it. They were hot enough to get us warm and heading back to our work!

Afternoon tea in Treeanon

January 11, 2014

Teatime with a friend is always pleasant experience.

Last saturday, I went to a tea room called Treeanon(트리아농 in Korean) located in Gangnam, the southern part of Seoul. It is a small place having six tables, but has an intimate atmosphere.

My friend and I had an Afternoon Tea. For tea, we chose Lady Grey, a citrus, orange and lemon flavored black tea. It was sweet and refreshing and a perfect choice for the cloudy day.

We also had delicious snacks along with the tea. Scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, sandwiches, pieces of pound cakes, croissant topped with strawberry, yogurt with nuts, grapes, and sweet macaroons!

I thought we could not eat them all at a first glance, but well, we had them all. It was around $15 per person, which was not as expensive as any afternoon tea provided in hotels. I loved it.
